A real delight to view the photos which bring back many, many "old" memories! The infamous "Charlie Section" of the 1956-58 era is well covered by the photos submitted by Bob D'Imperio, an old friend and running mate, as well as a "side-kick" on THE "monster" position which required two operators. I believe the SECGRU Marines, with 3 Officers and about 60 Enlisted troops, made their initial landing in Bremerhaven in early August 1956. The state of the art receiver in 1956 was the Hammurlund SP-600....we became technically sophisticated with the introduction of the R-390 in 1957! An absolute GREAT tour with GREAT people! |

Howe and thought I would drop by and say howdy. I am also an X-CTR and was stationed there at Bremerhaven also. I don't know if we were there at the same time or not. I was there from August of 1968 until October of 1971. I believe those dates are correct. The only thing that I remember is that there weren't too many sober days at B'Haven. Some of the guys that I hung out with were, of course George, Dick Prentiss, Walt Guill (from East Buggywhip Kentucky) and that is really the name of the town that he was from. Then there was Charles Provinceo(sp), John Bonnel, James Brown ( not the singer), he married a girl from the Rocky-Docky by the name of Gherda. And so on and so on. Send me an e-mail and maybe you can jog my memory. Talk to you later. Would you happen to be a Ham Operator???? My callsign is KD5JLV. Since you are up on computers, you will know how to get my personal info. Bye for now. Tom |

Was stationed in Bremerhaven from July 1961 through October 1964. Arrived as a CTC and departed as CTCS. Initially was the P&R Chief, and during the final year was assigned as P&R/ Operations Chief, under CDR JO Walker. Had three wonderful years at that station, both in Military and community affairs. One funny, but also sad Duty I had was forming the "Bremerhaven Choir" to sing the Navy hymn at a service for president Kennedy. I was the Duty Officer two days after he was shot, and a call came in requesting the "Choir" to sing. When CDR Coperthwait( XO) told me to get the choir, I replyed "we don't have one" He replied "we will". To make a long story short, we secured the barracks, got volunteers(?) the choir was formed, took them to the chapel to learn the song, sent them to Bremen. The Mayor of Bremen called Capt Hitz (CO) on Monday and said how great the choir was, to which the CO replied "what choir". They never sang again.. |

There are not too many websites out there that are about the Navy. I am currently trying to develope a page on women in the military, it of course takes some reasearch, so it is a bigger project then I expected, but I am going to do it. I have started by talking about my career in the military. I was originally a FN and crossrated into the CTI community. So far so Good, It is nice to see some more CT's out there. Keep up the good work. I have some military pictures of just me of course on my web page. It is not too much but you can see my pride. One question? How do you adopt a pow? That is something that i would really concider getting into. |

As an ROTC graduate of Univ of Southern California, my commissioning orders were to MANSFIELD via SDiego schools (Comm, EW, CIC). However, with Zumwalt's cut backs, the ordering of MANSFIELD to be decommed, I never got aboard as new orders were written for me to join FOX in WestPac, Sept 70. For those of you who remember back to '44 - '45, my father, Henry E. Lapkin, Jr. (dec.) served on HALE (DD642) and likely was in company with MANSFIELD from time to time. I congratulate you on your site and welcome you to visit the FOX site at ussfox.com. Best regards for the New Year and beyond! Steven Lapkin |
Name: Frank Perrault Website: Referred by: Clicked on our Banner Advertisement From: Severna Park, Md. Time: 2000-01-18 21:10:00 Comments: I was stationed in Bremerhaven from Dec. 1960 to Sept. 1964. Was probably the best duty station I had in my entire 22 year career. A German linguist and manual morse op while there. Worked P&R on the second deck, third if you count the basement. Also spent a few months on the line in "R" branch spaces during and after the Cuban crisis. All but a few marines were shipped out to Camp Lejeune during that crisis so there was a need for more morse operators. Since my division officer (Lt. Custer) had noticed that I would sit at the SP-600 receiver in his office trying to copy the news broadcast from WSL (not sure of call letters), he figured I would make a superb ditty chaser. What a culture shock for me. Having never sat at a circuit, it was no picnic for me. Got the knack of it after a week or so and rather enjoyed it. Subsequently had my clearance revoked since I had "Formed an affection for a foreign national." As you know, That meant I got married to a german girl. I was lucky and had my clearance restored after about six months and returned to the ops section where I remained until my transfer to Russian language school in Monterey, Calif. Unfortunately, I don't have any memorabilia anymore as it was all thrown away by my aforementioned wife (now ex) many, many years ago. Only have memories in my mind. A few of my old shipmates were: Dan "Rocky" Bonyeau, Howie Fontaine (was SEA for DIRNSA prior to his retirement in the late-80's), Ed Pomeroy, Denny Knott, Russ Martin, Tim Lunn, Jim Parish,CTRC James Moser, CTRC Sullivan (who passed away this past year), CTAC Al Kisner, CTT1 Lou Eighmey and many more great shipmates whose names I cannot remember. |

My second daughter was born there, and my wife had a difficult time of delivery and hemoraged. Some of the guys on the Eve watch (Charlie Section)- ((and unknowing to me as I waited in hospital)) came to hospital and donated blood! Your name sounds vaguely familar?? I came to NSGA Bremerhaven from NSGA Morocco! (Sidi Yahia). Arrived at Bremerhaven as CTR2 and about 4 months later made CTR1. I also was, and kinda still am, an active radio amateur. Had a station in the housing area (13/6 GroBer Blink) - about 2 blocks from Paulus Bowling. My German callsign DL4WS and my Stateside callsign is still WA2QKU. I also managed to mentor a new ham (CW NO SWEAT!!!), of course. Guess that kinda puts it in a nutshell. Gotta save this site to my favorites and comeback again with some more info.
