"I was somewhat aware of what was left of the old base, but what I saw, still was a bit of a disappointment. Upon turning left from Wuster Strasse, the main road from town into the base, I noticed the lack of buildings. No guard shack, no NCO club. The first building that I saw was a structure on the left side of the road that was from the old era. It was, I believe, an Army barracks. It looks in good repair, with the 3rd floor dormers being replaced with skylights. Driving further down the street and turning right, I saw a huge pile 15 to 20 ft. high of brick rubble. This was where the Operations Building once stood. I expect that this pile contained the remnants of all the buildings around the Quad, for there were no buildings at all. I retrieved a few pieces of brick to add to my scrape book. As I was taking pictures of the rubble pile and the empty Quad, I noticed 2 men step out of a little guard shack and they were giving me the eye. They were armed so I thought I'd better ask to see if it was OK to be there and to take pictures. They were very nice and said to take all the pictures I wanted, but I couldn't go beyond where they were standing. That was alright with me, for past them I didn't need to venture. The Container Harbor has now been extended up to the back of where the Op's Building was. The large cranes were clearly visible. I went back toward the main gate and made a right to go towards Radio City. The old church is still there, but when I tried the door, it was locked. It appears not to be in use. Radio City is still standing and has a few signs in English still hanging over the doors. BURGER BAR, RECR. CENTER, BOWLING. On the back side, signs read; ARTS & CRAFTS, THEATRE, SHOPPETTE. A sign indicating that ICB (International College Bremerhaven) now has a presence in the building. The area around the Quad looks like it was just recently cleared of debris, for the ground is bare of grass where the buildings once stood."
