"The small harbor behind Horton's still contains the Seute Deern which is open for touring and dinner. They have added several other floating ships to the "museum". A U-boot, a tug and a few others. The Radar tower is still there, but when I tried to visit, the entrance was locked. It appears it is still being used as a tourist lookout, but unfortunately it was not operating the day I went there. One thing missing from the streets of Bremerhaven are the street cars. (Strassenbahn) Only a few streets have the old tracks and a few still have the cobblestones pavers. Parking is quite organized. There are electronic signs that indicate how many spaces are available in each of the lots. During the day most of the lots were near capacity. The old main train station (Hauptbahnhof) is still in good repair. Outside, in front, there are several small shops, otherwise, it looks the same. At the corner of Rickmers Strasse and Hafen Strasse is the building that used to be Ramelow's department store. A part of the old logo is still visible on the front side. It is now a discount store. Across Rickmers Strasse is the bar Stortbecker, still there, but with a different façade. Down the block is the Aladin movie theater undergoing a face lift. Of course, no visit to Bremerhaven would be complete without a stroll down Lessing Strasse. It's still the red light district and the Blue Angle (Blauer Engel) looks more inviting than ever. I was told that because of the efficiency of the container harbor the sailors don't have any spare time to roam about Lessing Strasse as they once did. However, there was some evidence that this was still the place to be to shop for sex. At 134 Langener Land Strasse there is a bowling alley. Possibly the old Paulus Bowling, now called Fun Bowling." |
