Force Destroyers Do Good Deeds - No matter how you view it, the "People to People" program is an art practiced for years by Navymen in getting along with people. The phrase itself is a new but very well expressed description of an old Navy custom. |
Perhaps you envision something huge, such as a tremendous relief expedition to a disaster ravaged country. This can and does happen, but a successful program itself is the sum total of countless individual acts. It is to the credit of the U.S. Navymen that most of these are preformed without thought of credit for himself or for his country. It is hard, if not impossible, to come up with an overall definition that would cover the field. How would you embark upon a People to People program of your won? Perhaps you should take your cue from those you meet. This is what the destroyers MANSFIELD and DEHAVEN did when they called at Olongapo, Philippines. Forty crewmen and officers of the Mansfield worked around the clock to paint fifteen classrooms of the St. Joseph's Catholic School. In addition to this, $100 worth of athletic gear that was donated to the school. In return the children gave Mansfield's crew a thank you party. DeHaven's crew painted the Olongapo Methodist Church and donated $80 to its pastor for church use. |
