Frederick S. Griffin, Sr.,

He was born 18 December 1940, in Cambridge, MA and graduated from Watertown High School, Watertown, MA in 1959. He enlisted in the Navy in February 1959, completing basic training at Great Lakes, IL in May of that year. He began his cryptologic service with training at Imperial Beach in June 1959 and graduated second in his class. He served in the U.S. Navy until 1963, achieving the rate of CTR2. His duty stations included Sidi Yahia, Morocco from January 1960 to May 1960, when he was transferred to NCS, Guam. He remained at Guam until December 1961. He was then transferred to Kami Seya, Japan until February 1963. While attached to Kami Seya, he had various Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) assignments, including duty aboard the USS TANG (SS-563). He was separated from active service in February 1963 and served one year in the Reserves.

Mr. Griffin married Kathleen Helen McCarthy in Milton, MA in April 1967. They have five children and eleven grandchildren.

Civilian employment included three years with a securities brokerage firm followed by his long service with the Watertown Police Department. He was also a substitute teacher (2002-2005) at Sandwich Massachusetts High School. At the time of his death, he was employed part time at the Cape Cod Coast Guard Air Station as a Security Officer.

He received his Associate of Science in Criminal Justice in 1977 from Massachusetts Bay Community College, and a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement from Western New England College in October 1989.

He was for many years an avid Amateur Radio Operator (K1CDD) and also served as a notary public. His hobbies included boating, collecting historical documents, and enjoying his grandchildren.
