Joseph E. Eccles Jr.

NORWICH - Joseph E. Eccles Jr., 80, of 24 North Fifth Ave., Taftville, died Tuesday at the William W. Backus Hospital.

He was born in Norwich Nov. 29, 1920, a son of the late Joseph E. and Sarah (Casey) Eccles.

Mr. Eccles had served his country during World War II in the U. S. Navy as a Radioman.

He graduated from the Norwich Fee Academy with the class of 1939. Mr. Eccles was a co-chair-person for the class reunion committee.

He worked for many years in sales and service at Mallon Chevrolet and retired from Norwich Lincoln Mercury in 1988.

Mr. Eccles was a member of the American Legion Post No. 4 in Norwich. He coached American Legion Baseball and had won with his team a state championship. He was also very active in may youth athletic programs. Mr. Eccles was also a member of the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame.

He was a member of the Norwich Lodge of Elks, the Rose City Senior Citizens, AARP No. 1004 and the U. S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association.

Mr Eccles was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Norwich.

On Oct. 1, 1942 he married Annette F. Cunlife in New York. Mrs Eccles died Sept. 28, 1988.

He is survived by two sons, Gary E. Eccles of North Carolina and Ward G. Eccles of Baltic; one daughter, Joanne Eccles-Lotreck of Norwich; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will assemble Friday at 9 a.m. at the Cummings-Gagne Funeral Home, 82 Cliff St., Norwich, and proceed for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Church in Norwich. Burial will follow with military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Connecticut, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108-3272.
