I remember reporting for duty on Sunday morning July 4, 1971 after traveling from Buffalo, NY via NYC, Amsterdam and Bremen. It was a three-day weekend and the base held a picnic on Monday to celebrate the holiday. That day stands out vividly in my mind because it was the first time I experienced the combined effects of jet lag, hot sun and cold Beck's Bier. Eventually, the buzz in my head wore off and within a week I was temporarily assigned to the offices of the base Public Works Department. One of my first jobs there was to paint the sign that was displayed next to a wrecked Navy station wagon. Anyone there in the summer of '71 might recall seeing it parked near the operations building. Rumor had it that a Seabee unsuccessfully tried to jump a ditch. |
