I have managed to stay in touch with Marty over the years. He returned to Michigan then decided warmer climes were for him. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona and is retired from telephone company. Jack Bair retired after 20 and returned to his home state of Pennsylvania. He still works as deputy sheriff on a part time basis. Robert D'Imperio retired as Chief after 30 and was known as "Chief D.", much more respectable than "Dimp", which we hung on him. He lives in his home state of New Jersey. He is active in ham radio. Jim Wright finished his 32 year career as a CWO4. He resides in West Virginia and now spends much of his time researching his family tree. I returned to Okmulgee, Oklahoma at the end of almost 4 years. The Navy was discharging 4 months early at that time. Reclaimed my old job at the Ball Brothers Glass plant loading trucks. I enrolled in a tech school taking a drafting course. Class 6 hours - work 8 hours daily for 2 years until graduation. The Navy helped me in selecting drafting as a career as Chief Guy Fritz pulled my name from duty roster looking for someone with drafting training. The Op's building required plan drawings prepared with equipment type and locations for support of annual budget request. It took 6 weeks and resulted in the idea to enroll in school upon discharge. |

Woody was from Maine, played guitar, did a mean rendition of Johnny Cash's "I'll Walk the Line." Jack did 10 months TAD Cyprus during the time of guerrilla attacks against the British. I had the chance to take TAD on board the heavy cruiser USS Salem, at that time she was the Mediterranean flag. Tour was 10 months but I got cold feet and probably missed out on what would have been choice duty and a new adventure in the CT world. |
