WEAPONS DEPARTMENT
During the six month deployment, the MANSFIELD spent 42 days standing off the coast of the Republic of Vietnam providing Naval Gunfire Support to allied forces ashore. The MANSFIELD fired a total of 8,000 rounds of five inch ammunition during the 42 gunline days. The Gunners Mates and Fire Control Technicians were responsible for maintaining the ship's 5" gun battery and the associated fire control equipment. taking on fuel, ammunition and stores became a routine event soon after arriving in WESTPAC. The deck force obtained plenty of practice in these and other seamanship evolutions during the cruise. The Weapons Department, like Engineering, won a departmental "E" for excellence from Commander Destroyer Squadron NINE. |
